CANANGA

Cananga is a lush, exotic floral note derived from Cananga odorata macrophylla, a close relative of ylang-ylang. Its scent is rich, creamy, and slightly fruity, with undertones of spice and green freshness. Compared to ylang-ylang, Cananga is earthier and less narcotic, bringing natural warmth and floral roundness to oriental and woody compositions. Used as a heart note, it lends sensual depth and tropical luminosity.

History & Production: The essential oil of Cananga odorata is obtained by steam distillation of its delicate blossoms, often in tropical plantations across Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean islands. This oil contains compounds such as benzyl acetate, linalool, and methyl benzoate. Because the flowers are delicate, distillation must be precisely timed and gentle to preserve aromatic integrity. In perfumery, Cananga is sometimes used in blends or fractions alongside ylang-ylang for added depth and complexity.
