Iroko

Iroko is a distinctive, exotic woody note in perfumery inspired by the West African hardwood tree Milicia excelsa, often called the “African teak.” Its scent is dry, warm, and slightly resinous, with hints of golden sawdust, sun-baked wood, and faint spice, evoking the aroma of freshly cut timber in tropical heat. Compared to cedar or sandalwood, Iroko is more neutral and grainy—less creamy, more fibrous—offering a sense of authentic wood texture rather than polished smoothness. Used primarily as a base note, it lends stability, subtle warmth, and structure to woody, leathery, and ambery compositions.

History & Production: Although iroko wood itself yields minimal aromatic extract, its olfactory profile has inspired perfumers to create a synthetic Iroko accord that captures its unique balance of dryness and quiet richness. This accord is typically built with woody molecules such as Iso E Super, Cedramber, and Cashmeran, blended with resinous and slightly earthy nuances to mimic the tree’s dense grain and faintly balsamic tone. Revered in West African cultures as a sacred tree symbolizing protection and endurance, iroko embodies strength and grounded serenity. In perfumery, it serves as a modern woody backbone—clean, elemental, and enduringly elegant.
